Mandela Day in Action at Sparrow Schools!

This year, Mandela Month at Sparrow Schools Educational Trust signified kindness and connection. With several companies dedicating their time and resources to put smiles on the faces of our learners.

On 25 July, the Foundation Phase learners at Sparrow Foundation School enjoyed a vibrant and fun-filled day hosted by G&G Productions. The festivities kicked off with an energetic performance by Buzz Kids, setting the tone for a day of excitement and delight. Children unleashed their competitive spirits in classic games like the egg-and-spoon race and tug-of-war, while others let their imaginations take flight with creative face painting. After all the action, the learners relaxed with a tasty spread of pizza and juice, simple pleasures that made the day extra special.

Just a few days later, on 29 July, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines brought their own Mandela Day magic to Sparrow Foundation School. The visit began with a lively round of friendly competition in our Motor Gross Therapy class, where learners proudly demonstrated their skills on an obstacle course, showcasing strength, focus, and determination.

The excitement continued as the children and volunteers alike were captivated by The Timeless Tale of Pinocchio. But the gifts didn’t end there. Each learner received a thoughtful care package, including scarves, snacks, and scrunchies, to take home and cherish.

And the kindness didn’t stop there. Through the MyWalk initiative, Netcare Rehabilitation Hospital and Adcock Ingram Critical Care generously donated recycled school shoes to our learners.

This was far more than a Mandela Day activity. It was a powerful reminder of how compassion, partnership, and shared humanity can create meaningful moments for vulnerable and neurodiverse children.

At Sparrow Schools Educational Trust, we are deeply grateful to every partner who helped make this season of kindness so memorable. Together, we’re building a future where every child feels seen, supported, and celebrated.

The Feeding scheme

Raising Awareness, Strengthening our Safeguards

Hunger undermines a child’s ability to thrive in every area of life. Meeting basic needs such as food is essential, as learners cannot concentrate or perform academically when hungry.

At Sparrow, we recognise this challenge. Many of our learners come from under-resourced communities where going without a meal is all too common. These realities place additional pressure on children who are trying to learn, grow, and dream of a better future.

Sparrow Schools responds to this need through our feeding scheme, ensuring every learner receives a nutritious and balanced meal.

This isn’t just about food; it’s about dignity, energy, and giving each child the foundation they need to succeed.

The feeding scheme is sustained through the generosity and care of those who believe in what we do.

If you’d like to get involved, offer support, or simply learn more about how you can make a difference, please reach out to renata.noble@sparrowportal.co.za.

Being dedicated to providing quality education to neurodiverse learners also means being dedicated to ensuring teachers are equipped to accomplish this mission.

As such, the teachers from the Foundation and Combined Technical Skills School kicked term 3 off with training hosted by educational psychologist Dr Soni (from the Vaal University of Technology). The training session focused on intentional teaching, collaboration, and practical strategies for supporting neurodiverse learners.

The teachers left feeling refreshed and with a shared purpose, equipped with valuable insights and tools, ready to make a powerful impact in the lives of the learners.

Honouring 10 Years with the Sage Foundation

The Sparrow Combined Technical Skills School’s marimba and drumming ensemble was invited by the UK-based Sage Foundation to perform at their 10th birthday celebration.

It was a powerful, uplifting day, filled with rhythm, talent, and pride.

The performance not only showcased the learners’ hard work and creativity but also highlighted the school’s commitment to nurturing artistic expression as a vital part of teaching and learning.

Celebrating the Women of Sparrow Schools Educational Trust

“There is no force more powerful than a woman determined to rise.” — W.E.B. Du Bois

In celebration of Women’s Month, the female staff of Sparrow Schools Educational Trust treated all the ladies to a day of indulgence and relaxation, a spa experience to remember.

The day was filled with manicures, pedicures, massages, and a few stylish hair touch-ups, thanks to the generous support of the Beauty Hub Academy, who donated their time and skills to make the Sparrow women feel truly special.

A delicious lunch was generously provided by Spur, adding to the sense of celebration and care.

The afternoon concluded with the presentation of a makeup hamper provided by Maybelline, followed by goodie bags for all. Smiles all around and a fitting end to a day dedicated to honouring, pampering, and uplifting the incredible women of Sparrow Schools Educational Trust.

A Borehole for the Foundation School

Here’s to building stronger foundations—one drop at a time.

Thanks to the generous support of Femmes d’Europe, the Sparrow Schools Educational Trust has taken a vital step toward greater water security at its Foundation School.

Over the weekend of 16 and 17 August, drilling commenced, and excitement soared when we struck water! While there is still work ahead, including installing a pump and completing the full water system, this milestone marks a significant leap forward.

The new borehole will play a crucial role in sustainable water management and will ensure our learners have reliable access to clean water.

With this infrastructure in place, we are creating a safer, more supportive environment where every child can truly thrive.

It is partnerships and support like this that allow us to continue making a difference in the lives of neurodiverse and vulnerable children. Ultimately, giving them the quality and specialised education they deserve.

Winter School

Sparrow Schools Educational Trust is in partnership with Bellavista School. A more affluent institution that also educates neurodiverse learners. Bellavista recently hosted a winter school reading programme and invited 10 learners from the Foundation School to take part.

Each day followed a structured routine designed to help learners thrive. From creative exercises like building their own words using specific rhyme patterns to engaging lessons that supported their learning journey.

Beyond academics, energising extramural activities kept spirits high, from sports and music-based sound identification to arts and crafts and nature treasure hunts. A joyful, enriching experience that blended learning, play, and growth in equal measure.
