UK Newsletter Q1 2026

A New Year, A New Beginning at Sparrow

As we step into 2026, we do so with renewed purpose, fresh milestones, and deep gratitude for the community that continues to walk this journey with us. The start of a new academic year always brings anticipation but this quarter has been especially meaningful as we welcomed new learners, new leaders, and new opportunities across our schools.

From first-time achievements to moments of leadership, partnership, and remembrance, this edition of our UK Newsletter reflects the heart of Sparrow: growth rooted in care, and progress driven by people.

A Historic First

GRADE R AT SPARROW FOUNDATION SCHOOL

This year marked a landmark moment for Sparrow Foundation School with the introduction of our very first Grade R class. This milestone represents more than an expansion, it is an intentional investment in early childhood development for neurodiverse learners, laying strong foundations for lifelong learning.
Our youngest learners have already begun their journey in a nurturing, structured environment designed to spark curiosity, confidence, and joy. We are proud to open our doors earlier than ever before, ensuring that support begins where it matters most.

Strengthening Leadership & Support at Foundation School

Alongside this exciting growth. Sparrow Foundation School welcomed two key appointments: a new Principal, Mr Ande Nongongo, and Ms Naomi Groenewald- a dedicated Remedial Specialist.

Their arrival signals a deepened commitment to academic excellence, learner-centred support, and holistic development. With strong leadership and specialised intervention working hand-in-hand, we are better positioned to meet the diverse needs of our learners and guide them toward meaningful progress.
“We are ensuring that our ‘New Path’ is built on a foundation of true expertise and empathy.” -Melanie Malema

FIRST PARENTS’ DAY FOR 2026

Both Sparrow Foundation School and Sparrow Combined Technical Skills School proudly hosted their first Parents* Day.

These gatherings created valuable space for connection, conversation, and collaboration between parents and educators. Together, we reflected on learner journeys, shared expectations for the year ahead, and reinforced the belief that when schools and families work together, learners thrive.

Leading with Purpose

NEW PREFECTS ELECTED .

Leadership took centre stage this quarter as Sparrow Combined Technical Skills School elected new prefects.

For our learners, this is more than a title, it is a chance to build confidence, responsibility and a sense of purpose. Our newly elected prefects have already stepped into their roles with pride, setting positive examples for their peers and reminding us that leadership can be nurtured at every age.

A Powerful Act of Giving

FNB VOLUNTEERS SUPPORT FOUNDATION SCHOOL

We are deeply grateful to the First National Bank (FNB) Volunteers who made a significant donation to Sparrow Foundation School this quarter.

Their generosity has had an immediate and meaningful impact, enhancing the learning environment and ensuring our learners have access to essential resources. This act of service reflects the power of corporate citizenship and the difference that hands-on involvement can make in the lives of children.

Thank you, FNB Volunteers, for standing with Sparrow and believing in our mission.

In Loving Memory

A TRIBUTE TO ILANI

This edition of the newsletter is shared with heavy hearts as we honour the life and legacy of Hani, our late CSI Assistant and Fundraising Coordinator. Ilani was the quiet force behind every previous UK newsletter- a storyteller, connector, and passionate advocate for Sparrow’s work. Her dedication ensured that our partners and donors felt informed, valued, and inspired. More than that, she brought warmth, care and integrity to everything she touched.

Her impact lives on in the relationships she nurtured, the stories she told, and the foundation she helped build. Ilani will always remain part of the Sparrow story, and she is deeply missed by all who had the privilege of working alongside her.

Thank You for Walking This Journey With Us

None of this would be possible without the continued support of our donors, partner schools, and friends in the UK. Your belief in Sparrow enables us to grow, innovate, and remain steadfast in our commitment to neurodiverse learners from under-resourced communities.

As we look ahead to the rest of 2026, we do so encouraged, inspired and grateful. Thank you for being part of our journey and for helping us shape futures filled with dignity, possibility and hope.
